Box gutter replacement
Box gutter replacement for Melbourne homes
A box gutter is a rectangular channel built into the roof, in a valley between two roofs, behind a parapet wall or along the edge of the roof, so it is hidden from the street. They are common on older homes, townhouses and units, and on any roof where a standard eaves gutter will not fit. Because they carry the water from a large area of roof, a box gutter that rusts, blocks or does not drain properly can leak into the ceiling and walls long before you see a problem outside. D Steel Roofing replaces box gutters across Melbourne, Keilor, Sunshine, Pascoe Vale, Gisborne, Greenvale, Sunbury, Melton, and the Macedon Ranges.
Signs your box gutter needs replacing
- Water stains, bubbling paint or damp patches on ceilings and walls below the gutter.
- Rust, holes or open joins in the gutter, especially along seams and around outlets.
- Water pooling, or leaves and debris sitting in the gutter after rain, which can mean it does not have enough fall.
- Water overflowing into the roof space or down the wall during heavy rain.
- Repeated patch repairs that no longer hold.
What box gutter replacement involves
Every roof is different, so the first step is to inspect the gutter, the roof sheeting and flashings around it, and the way water leaves the roof. A box gutter replacement typically means removing the old gutter and any damaged lining, checking and repairing what is underneath, and installing a new steel box gutter with the right fall to its outlets, properly sealed and flashed joins, and an overflow so water has somewhere safe to go if the gutter blocks. The old materials are then removed from site.
Box gutters work together with your roof sheeting, flashings, downpipes and fascia, so we look at the whole drainage system rather than one section. That way a new gutter is not undone by an old flashing or a blocked downpipe, and if you also need new fascia or downpipes they can be replaced at the same time.
